This advert starts with a wide long shot; this sets the scene and lets you get a feel of the atmosphere from the moment the ad starts. You see how desolate, dusty and hot the place is. It also makes you think that this advert is set in the past, however you see a satellite dish, suggesting different timings. So whatever they are advertising must be quite an old product, but still loved till this date. There is a barrier (similar to the ones we see today) between two people. These two people are marching up and down this barrier on either side. This shows they are from different sides, possibly enemies; the barrier also looks quite old, maybe suggesting that this feud between the two sides has gone on for a long time. They are also ‘eyeballing’ each other as they march. This shows the hostility between these two people.
Then, 8 seconds in you see them stop at the exact same time and look down. This is because the shot before showed a wrapper flying along the ground. That same wrapper just passed across the border from the man in red to the man in grey. The man in grey then brings out his sword, pierces the wrapper and thrusts the wrapper to the other side, showing that anything from the other side Is not allowed. This really lets you know how much the two people despise each other.
The music in the background is a very military style one; it goes well with the theme of this advert. However what exactly it is advertising is not shown yet. After the wrapper incident has gone the two men continue as usual, marching up and down their side of the barrier. Then as the two men are furthest away from each other the man in red opens a bottle of coke. The man in grey can hear this sound as it opens and freezes. The man in red is out of focus while the man in gray is in focus. This lets you know that the man in grey is the man we are focusing on but the man in red is still important, just not as at the moment.
Finally at 19 seconds we see the product-coke. I personally found this quite comical, I was expecting the ad to be about something much more serious, but no it was about coke. We see the man tilting his head back with his eyes closed taking the first sip of his bottle of coke. This suggests that it is refreshing and tastes good. You then see the man in grey turn back and you hear the music change to violins, quite different to the music before. You can see the man in grey looks quite upset that he doesn’t have any coke. Suddenly you see the man in red turn, get a coke from an icebox (another strange object because of the area) and walk toward the man in grey. This action is very fast and at first I missed this important action. The two men are then facing each other and the man in grey looks to see if anyone is looking, showing that what they are doing is wrong, but worth it. The man in red tries to give the coke but realising he can’t, places it on the floor, gets out his sword (the grey man flinches) and draws a curved line around it. Immediately after you see the other man swipe the line and thus creating a new boarder so he can get his coke this is a very fluid strain of actions, showing that the two men understand each other. He then lifts the coke and drinks from it, the music changes back the starting music and is a lot louder, showing triumph. They are both drinking at the same time and once done look at each other and smile. Then realising what they are doing they stop immediately- the music abruptly stops while this happens. Then the music starts again and they go back to marching, returning the boarder to its usual line as they walk. This shows that coke can overcome barriers and create friendship between enemies.
There are many different shot sizes in this add, 44 of them. Some focus on one person (0.04) and some on both from the side, letting us know they are both important in that shot (0.09). Then right at the end you see the brand name and logo with ‘open happiness written next to it’, this works with the ad, the two men were happy with their coke.
